As a registered charity, we also make significant donations towards music education initiatives around the world.

Founded in 1889, we have a long and storied history. But our mission has stayed the same: to nurture a love for music, and to inspire achievement in it. At ABRSM, we believe that everyone, wherever they’re from, should have access to high-quality music-learning.

Globally renowned exams and assessments

In partnership with the Royal Schools of Music, we support music-making and learning across the globe. We offer pathways and resources for learners and teachers that help build musical skills and encourage progress.

Our core activity is providing graded music exams, assessments and diplomas. An ABRSM grade has a worldwide currency and our exams are designed to motivate learners at all levels and ages, providing realistic goals and tangible rewards for their achievements.

And much more

We support teachers and learners with a range of award-winning digital resources and publications, as well as host events and offer professional qualifications.

As a charity, we invest more than £6 million in music education every year, all across the globe. We also work with organisations around the world, providing donations, scholarships and sponsorship.

Our partnership work is never one-off – we build long-lasting relationships and support ongoing projects. We advocate for music, playing our part to ensure the future of music education and its place in society. Working towards this goal for over a century means that we’re a trusted voice at a boardroom table as well as on a concert stage.

Led by our executive board and governing body, our staff members, examiners and volunteers work with passion and dedication to make learning music what it should always be: a joyous and life-enriching experience.

Faber Music

+44 (0)20 7908 5310

Bloomsbury House, Great Russell Street, London, United Kingdom

London

Faber Music Ltd was founded in 1965, as a sister company to the distinguished book publisher Faber and Faber. Seeking a publisher that would offer the highest score production standards and tailored services to promote and disseminate his works, it was Benjamin Britten who triggered the venture. The principles on which it was founded have been the company’s hallmark ever since. Shortly after its birth, The Times newspaper called Faber Music “the new champion of quality in music publishing”. Fifty years on, the company is now one of the leading independent British publishers of classical, contemporary, media, and printed pop and educational music, enjoying a reputation as one of the most influential publishers of serious contemporary classical music in the world.

At the core of Faber Music’s print catalogue are tutors, repertoire and educational publications by world-renowned figures in their respective fields, including Fanny Waterman, Paul Harris and Pam Wedgwood. Most recent is the launch of the Lang Lang Piano Academy, a learning method created by one of the most influential pianists the world has ever seen.

Besides repertory works by Vaughan Williams, Arnold, Holst and Britten, Faber Music’s performance catalogue features one of the most distinguished lists of internationally recognised house composers, including George Benjamin, Thomas Adès, Oliver Knussen, Jonathan Harvey and, most recently, Anders Hillborg. The company’s established British core (Colin and David Matthews, Julian Anderson, Nicholas Maw, Tansy Davies) is complemented by a strong Australian connection, (Peter Sculthorpe, Carl Vine and Matthew Hindson), and a growing catalogue of young talent (Francisco Coll, Martin Suckling and Tom Coult).

Faber Music also handles Carl Davis’s renowned scores for great films of the silent era (including NapoleonThe General and the Chaplin Mutuals), Lloyd Webber’s Cats, the concert works of Paul McCartney, Howard Goodall and Jonny Greenwood, and the classical/electronic composer Anna Meredith.

The company’s substantial media division represents outstanding internationally established composers of music for film and television, including Howard Goodall (Vicar of DibleyMr Bean), Jonny Greenwood (There will be blood) and Carl Davis (Pride & Prejudice, Cranford). Through its subsidiary Rights Worldwide Ltd it offers a specialist service of copyright administration to media composers and production companies. Award-winning composers include Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love), Jeremy Sams (Enduring Love), Simon Rogers (Hustle) and Dan Jones (Any Human Heart).

Following an exclusive European print licence deal with Warner Chappell in 2005, the catalogue now encompasses some of the most famous names in popular 20th-century music: Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, an array of Broadway and West End musicals and some of the biggest names in contemporary pop and rock, including Radiohead, Elbow and Muse. As the exclusive agent for the Warner Chappell rental catalogue outside North America, Faber Music handles a vast array of musicals (including Bugsy Malone), operas, operettas and popular concert works (including Gershwin, Bax, Coates and Loewe).

Faber Music’s philosophy is to identify and support outstanding composing and other creative musical ability wherever it is to be found, and to provide supreme service for all of its partners and customers by nurturing a close working relationship with each. The company continues to build up and promote its music copyrights internationally, and is proud to provide distribution and administration facilities of unrivalled excellence.

Beginning with the participation in the German singing movement during the 1920s, Protestant church music and the burgeoning interest in early music, Bärenreiter quickly developed its distinctive profile.

Teach music in school with Jolly Music

Get your class singing!

Jolly Music has been developed so that any primary/elementary teacher, whether they are a musician or non-specialist, can effectively teach music to schoolchildren and help them learn to love music! The carefully developed primary/elementary music resources offer clear step-by-step guides to singing lessons, accompanying Audio CDs for additional teaching support, and illustrated Big Books with song lyrics, giving teachers the confidence to teach music in an effective and enjoyable way.

Teach music skills in a fun & effective way with Jolly Music!

Jolly Music is based on the tried and tested principles of Hungarian composer and music educator, Zoltán Kodály. Using this philosophy, Cyrilla Rowsell and David Vinden, both experienced practitioners and teachers of the Kodály method, have developed the Jolly Music programme.

Jolly Music is a structured and progressive programme for teaching music skills to children. It is a multi-sensory programme, with all the teaching done through singing. This approach enables children to become instant music makers without the need to learn how to play an instrument.

How does Jolly Music work?

Through a repertoire based on playground rhymes and songs, children become aware of musical elements including pulse, rhythm, pitch, loudness and speed. Activities and musical games support multi-sensory learning and make the lessons fun. The singing lessons are carefully structured to build the key musical skills of listening, singing in tune, inner hearing, and ultimately reading and writing music. Taught in this way, classroom music will build children’s motivation, enthusiasm and confidence, and lay the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment.
