The Furtados Institute of Piano Technology has been set up in Mumbai to train piano tuners and technicians to serve the music community in India.

The first two-year diploma course with ten trainees commenced in June 2012, at state-of-the-art workshop premises in Vikhroli (West), in Mumbai. The course is being run by Concert Tuner, Steve Droy, and Piano Restorer and Technician, D J Y Smallman — both from the UK — with over 50 years of experience between them and have transferred residence to Mumbai to create, execute and teach the course. Their services as professional tuners/technicians are therefore available to the city of Mumbai, in particular, and to the rest of the country, in general.

In addition to Annual Maintenance Contracts for pianos in private residences and institutions, and tuning for concerts and events, full restoration and repair jobs are also being undertaken at our professional workshop in Mumbai.

The Pianoforte Tuners’ Association

+44 (0) 845 6028796

PTA Secretary Mrs Annette Summers PO Box 230 HAILSHAM BN27 9EA

South-East England

The Pianoforte Tuners’ Association was founded in 1913.

The PTA became a trade union in 1920, but was de-registered in 1972 to become a professional body.

Since then, its membership has gradually grown, proclaiming its commitment to improving standards, to the extent that since 1975, all applicants for membership must pass theoretical and practical examinations to prove their ability as qualified tuners or technicians.

For many years, the Association was firmly based in London. However, since 1981, a Convention and Annual General Meeting has been held in different towns throughout Great Britain to which all classes of membership and aspiring non-members are invited, and where they may learn new techniques and hone their skills.

The Association has an international membership around the world.
